Resume Canadian citizenship: After you apply

Processing your application

Processing time

Processing time is the average for how long it takes from when an application is received to when we make a decision. Learn more about processing times.

Once your application is received at the Case Processing Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia, it will be reviewed and we will start processing it.

Some applications may encounter delays. For example, if documents are missing or if your case is complex, we may contact you to get more information or to ask you to send us additional information. Such cases may take longer to process.

To find out how long it takes to process applications to resume your Canadian citizenship, see processing times. You can check the status of your application on line.

If you cannot see the status of your application online, and the normal processing times have passed, you may contact us by using this Web form.

You may have to be interviewed by a citizenship officer. If so, we will notify you by mail of the time and place of your interview.

If we approve your application

You may withdraw your application. If you do, you may be eligible for a refund.

Maintaining eligibility requirements until the taking of the Oath

You must meet all of the eligibility requirements for a resumption of citizenship until the time you take the Oath of Citizenship.

After your application is approved, you could be prevented from taking the Oath and becoming a citizen if you:

  • lose permanent resident status, or
  • have been asked by Canadian officials to leave Canada (removal order).
