Am I a Canadian citizen under the new law?

Image of blue circle with white question markRenounced means that a person has successfully applied to give up their Canadian citizenship status with the Canadian government. If you renounced your citizenship with the Canadian government, you may have received a certificate of renunciation.

Renouncing your citizenship is not the same thing as automatically losing your citizenship. For example, under previous legislation, Canadian citizens who took an oath of citizenship in another country could automatically lose their Canadian citizenship. This is not the same as renunciation of citizenship.

Granted Canadian citizenship means that a person applied for citizenship and their application was approved and then they took the oath of citizenship, if required to (also called naturalization). Example: a person immigrates to Canada as an adult and becomes a permanent resident and then after residing in Canada for three years applies for and is granted citizenship.
