The changes to the Citizenship Act do not restore citizenship to individuals whose citizenship was revoked for fraud or to individuals who have formally renounced their citizenship.

In order to obtain a formal decision as to whether you are a Canadian citizen under the new law, you have the option of applying for proof of Canadian citizenship.


Image of blue circle with white question markRevoked for fraud means that a person’s Canadian citizenship status was taken away by the Canadian government. The Citizenship Act provides for the revocation of citizenship of persons who have obtained their citizenship or permanent residence status through false representation, fraud or knowingly concealing material circumstances.

Renounced means that a person has successfully applied to give up their Canadian citizenship status. If you renounced your citizenship with the Canadian government, you may have received a certificate of renunciation.
