The Global Case Management System (GCMS) is a multi-year program that, once fully deployed, will replace several of the business systems of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) with an integrated, case management-based set of applications and infrastructure components that will support CIC’s and the CBSA’s client operations.
The Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) on GCMS was submitted to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC) in February 2004. As the project is ongoing, it was agreed by the OPC that a new PIA would be required only if there was a major change in the functionality of GCMS. The GCMS project would, however, provide periodic updates to the OPC throughout the life of the project.
GCMS tracks the type of personal information required to process citizenship and immigration clients. The type of personal information collected includes, but is not limited to, client identification (i.e., family name and given names, gender, date of birth, country of birth, etc.), address information and history, educational information, criminality, and medical and travel history.
GCMS provides a level of protection that reflects CIC’s need for availability and integrity, Government of Canada requirements for protected B level information, and the requirements of the Privacy Act and associated Treasury Board policies.
Privacy risks have been identified as part of this assessment and are being addressed.
