I’ve always been proud to be a Canadian, and to be honest, that pride’s even greater when I’m not in the country.

As a Canadian by birth, one takes one’s citizenship for granted, until one is somewhere else.

But since I became a Parliamentarian, and especially since I was appointed Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, I have witnessed what citizenship truly means to those who came to Canada to make this country their home, and then became Canadian. To me, being Canadian is a sense of pride in our land, in our people—from our Indigenous Peoples to new immigrants—pride in our society and pride in the way we see ourselves as a nation: one that embraces equality of all, regardless of gender, ethnicity or culture; one that celebrates diversity as a strength; and one that is open, inclusive and generous to those that need our help at home and around the world. That’s what being Canadian means to me, and I encourage all of you to share what being Canadian means to you. I encourage all of you to share what being Canadian means to you.
