News Release - Minister Kenney recognizes Eid al-Adha celebrations

Ottawa, December 8, 2008 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement on Eid al-Adha:

“Today is significant for the Muslim people throughout the world as it is the beginning of Eid al-Adha, a celebration held during the month of Dhul Hijja, during which pilgrimages to Mecca are undertaken. Also known as the Islamic Festival of Sacrifice, it commemorates Abraham’s willingness to obey Allah in sacrificing his son. It is a time marked by special prayers, visits with family and friends, the exchange of greetings and gifts and the sharing of food with the poor and needy.

I extend my best wishes to those celebrating Eid al-Adha in Canada and around the world.  It is my hope that all Canadians, regardless of their backgrounds, will take this opportunity to reflect on the many contributions the Muslim community has made to Canada.”
