News Release – Government of Canada supports “When the Spirit Moves,” in Celebration of Black History Month 2011

Vancouver, February 18, 2011 — John Weston, Member of Parliament for West Vancouver─ Sunshine Coast─ Sea-to-Sky Country, today announced financial support for the “When the Spirit Moves,” a series of Black History Month celebrations taking place in Vancouver and Burnaby, British Columbia.

“By funding festivals like this one, we help showcase the diversity of our country, while fostering inter-cultural understanding among Canadians,” said MP Weston on behalf of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney.

The National Congress of Black Women Foundation is receiving $13,300 for the event under Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Inter-Action program.

“The Government of Canada is delivering funds to people from various backgrounds to ensure opportunities exist to share culture, customs, and history,” added MP Weston.

The festival, which will take place February 1 to 26 in various locations throughout Vancouver and Burnaby, is open to the public. Activities include a variety of discussions, performances, and presentations designed to celebrate the cultural traditions, art, and literature of Black Canadians in the community.
