Speaking Notes - Statement from the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, on citizenship issues

Ottawa, Ontario, February 26, 2007

At the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration we heard today from witnesses who talked about their stories and how their citizenship is at issue.

These stories are moving and compelling and my sympathy goes out to those affected by laws that have been on Canada’s books for many years.

I am treating these cases as a priority. I have directed the department to resolve these questions as quickly as possible.

It’s clear the circumstances of those who testified today are emotional to hear. At the same time, I think it’s also important to keep the scale of the issue in perspective. To date the Department’s dedicated team in the Call Centre has processed 881 calls on potential loss of citizenship. Of these, only 27 required further review and the balance were confirmed as citizens. I have arranged for 33 special grants of citizenship using my ministerial authority under the Citizenship Act.

Working with our partners we have received assurances that no one will lose government benefits and they can remain in Canada while their case is under review.

We are taking action. I want to assure people who are affected that I am actively seeking the speedy resolution of their cases.
