Designated medical practitioner program

What’s new

Announcements:

New Handbook for Designated Medical Practitioners

The new and improved Handbook for Designated Medical Practitioners is now available. It includes information about Designated Medical Practitioners (DMP) responsibilities and duties, professional conduct, ethics and conflict of interest, and is intended to improve the immigration medical system. The new DMP Handbook is effective June 1st, 2009. Until June 1st, DMPs should refer to the 2003 edition of the DMP Handbook (included on the page linked above).

DMP Acceptance of Appointment and Application for Appointment as a DMP form

CIC is currently developing a new Management and Control framework for the DMP Program. One element of the framework is that all DMPs formally accept the roles and responsibilities laid out in the revised DMP Handbook. The form must be filled out by all DMPs and forwarded to CIC headquarters. The form is located in Appendix XIV of the DMP Handbook linked above.

Another element of this new DMP framework involves collecting key information regarding the medical practice, radiology and pathology clinics used by DMPs, in addition to their official language competencies. In order to conduct Canadian immigration medical exams, all DMPs have to complete the Application for Appointment as a DMP form which is located in Appendix XIII of the revised DMP Handbook linked above.

Reappointment standards

All DMPs must adhere to certain standards in order to perform Canadian immigration medical exams. Find out more about the Reappointment Standards.

DMP recruitment

  • Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is committed to providing applicants in Canada with the choice of receiving their immigration medical examination in their preferred official language.
  • We are actively seeking medical practitioners in Canada who can provide services in both official languages.
  • Interested medical practitioners should contact the regional medical office in Ottawa for more information on how to get involved.

Application form changes

  • Recent changes to the CIC sponsorship kits for people applying from outside of Canada have resulted in a renaming of the Medical Instructions form from Appendix D to Appendix C. The contents of the form requesting an up-front medical exam remain the same.
  • Applicants who present themselves with an Appendix C or an Appendix D require a Medical Report: Section A – EFC form.

Immigration medical exam procedures update

The revised Handbook for Designated Medical Practitioners has new instructions for certain immigration medical procedures. All designated medical practitioners should read, understand and apply the new medical procedures.
