What is a government-assisted refugee?
"Government-assisted refugees" are refugees from the Convention Refugees Abroad Class. The Government of Canada or the Government of Quebec supports their initial resettlement in Canada.
Refugees selected for resettlement to Canada have often had to flee their home country because of extreme hardship. In some cases, they have lived in refugee camps for many years. They are often victims of trauma or torture. They may have special needs. When they arrive in Canada, they often have nothing with them but a few personal effects.
