I have applied to extend my study permit. Can I travel outside Canada while I wait for the extension?

Yes. You can leave Canada, but you will be faced with one of four scenarios when you return.

  1. You may be allowed to return to Canada as a temporary resident, if at the time of your return, CIC has not made a decision to extend your study permit. In that case, you will not be able to study until you receive your new permit. In addition, the port-of-entry (POE) officer may ask you to prove that you are able to support yourself in Canada.
  2. You may be allowed to return to Canada as a student, if the POE officer has received the final decision from CIC that your study permit has been extended.
  3. You may be asked to apply for a new study permit at the port of entry.
  4. You may be denied entry. The final decision to permit your entry to Canada rests with the border services officer with the Canada Border Services Agency.
