I have applied to extend my study permit. Can I travel outside Canada while I wait for the extension?
Yes. You can leave Canada, but you will be faced with one of four scenarios when you return.
- You may be allowed to return to Canada as a temporary resident, if at the time of your return, CIC has not made a decision to extend your study permit. In that case, you will not be able to study until you receive your new permit. In addition, the port-of-entry (POE) officer may ask you to prove that you are able to support yourself in Canada.
- You may be allowed to return to Canada as a student, if the POE officer has received the final decision from CIC that your study permit has been extended.
- You may be asked to apply for a new study permit at the port of entry.
- You may be denied entry. The final decision to permit your entry to Canada rests with the border services officer with the Canada Border Services Agency.
