What sort of changes can we expect in the new selection criteria for the Federal Skilled Worker Program?

The Federal Skilled Worker Program will update the way points are assessed for selection factors. Find out more about the six selection factors.

The proposed changes are meant to better select skilled immigrants who will be able to contribute to the Canadian economy.

The proposed changes include:

  • making language the most important selection factor by introducing minimum official language levels and giving more points for language;
  • making changes to the assessment of education points to reflect a foreign educational credential’s value in Canada;
  • giving more points to younger immigrants who are more likely to get valuable Canadian experience and remain in the workforce longer;
  • reducing points for foreign work experience and increasing points for Canadian work experience;
  • simplifying the process for the Arranged Employment factor to prevent fraud and abuse yet allow employers to staff positions quickly; and
  • making it easier for skilled tradespersons to come to Canada by making a separate Federal Skilled Trades program using selection criteria that are more specific to those in the skilled trades.
