Applying as an adopted child or other relative being sponsored


Use this application package if a family member in Canada has:

  • agreed to sponsor you and
  • filled out a sponsorship application after July 18, 2011

If your family member submitted their application before July 18, 2011, you must fill out the Generic Application Form for Canada (IMM 0008) and the Schedule A – Background/Declaration (IMM 5669).

Only a family member who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor you to immigrate to Canada.

To be sponsored using this application, you must be:

  • the sponsor’s:
  • child adopted outside Canada
  • child who will be adopted in Canada or
  • brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild who is
    • orphaned
    • under 18 years old and
    • not married or in a common-law relationship

or

  • related to the sponsor if the sponsor does not have any other relatives that
    • can be sponsored (such as a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, child, parent, sibling, grandparent, uncle or aunt, niece or nephew)
      • are Canadian citizens
      • are permanents residents
      • are registered Indians

Note: If you are a Canadian citizen adopting a child from another country, you may apply for Canadian citizenship for your adopted child right away. You do not have to apply for permanent residence for your child first. If you are an adult who was adopted by a Canadian citizen, you may apply for citizenship for yourself.
