65th Anniversary of the Commission of the First Chinese Officer in a Commonwealth Navy
In 1943 Sub-Lieutenant William K.L. Lore became the first Chinese Canadian in the Royal Canadian Navy and the first officer of Chinese descent in all the Navies of the British Commonwealth. Because of his ability to speak Cantonese, Second-Lieutenant Lore was one of the first British officers to land in Hong Kong at the end of the war.
Mr. Lore not only witnessed the official handover of the colony from the surrendering Japanese, but he was also among the first to liberate the prisoners of war held by the Japanese at the Sham Shui Po Prison Camp.
