Background

The Government of Canada has designated 2010 as the Year of the British Home Child in Canada. It commemorates the United Kingdom’s Child Migration Scheme that brought over 100,000 children from Britain to Canada from 1869 through to the late 1940s.

Phil McColeman, Member of Parliament for Brant, tabled Motion 438 recommending that 2010 be designated as the Year of the British Home Child. The motion passed with unanimous consent of the House on December 7, 2009.

Provincially, New Brunswick recognized 2009 as the Year of the British Home Child, to mark the 140th anniversary of the arrival of the first home children in 1869, and Nova Scotia declared October 2009 the Month of the British Home Children.
