Sales tax

Paying sales tax

In Canada, the price you see on an object is not the final price you will pay. Goods and Services Tax (GST), and Provincial Sales Tax (PST) or Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in some provinces, will be added at the time or purchase.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

The Government of Canada adds five percent to the price of most goods and services in Canada.

For more information, visit the Government of Canada’s GST website.

Provincial Sales Tax (PST)

The amount of PST varies depending on the province or territory. Alberta, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and the Yukon do not have provincial or territorial sales taxes.

Harmonized Sales Tax (HST)

The provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick charge Harmonized Sales Tax, or HST. In these provinces, the provincial sales tax and the federal goods and services tax are combined into a sales tax.

For more information about the HST, visit the Canada Revenue Agency website.
