Medium-sized cities

Medium-sized Canadian cities, from East to West:

Small cities

Smaller cities include such places as Sydney, Corner Brook, Charlottetown, Moncton, Trois Rivieres, Brandon, Moose Jaw, Red Deer and Kelowna. These offer most of the same public and private facilities and services found in the larger cities, but with a lower cost of living.

You can find these cities and towns in the Atlas of Canada provincial and territorial maps.

Francophone communities

Canada has two official languages: English and French. French is the mother tongue of 6.6 million Canadians. If French is your first language and the one you are most comfortable with, you may wish to join one of Canada’s many vibrant francophone communities.

You can find information about the francophone communities in Canada’s provinces and territories from the Atlas de la francophonie.

Francophone communities outside Quebec

You may wish to live outside Quebec in a francophone community. Most francophones live in Quebec, but nearly 1 million live in one of Canada’s other provinces and territories.

The size of francophone communities within cities and towns outside Quebec varies. The working language in these communities is usually English.

Education is run by the provinces and territories. Whether or not you can find francophone schools in a community depends on the region.
