Protect yourself from fraud

Certain organizations claim to offer "support" to Canadian citizens who want to apply for a passport, such as by selling information kits that outline application procedures. Some also falsely claim to be able to speed up the passport application process for an additional fee.

What you should know:

  • No third-party person or group can speed up the processing of your passport application.
  • Only Passport service locations are authorized to collect passport processing fees. Service locations include: the Passport Program regional offices; Service Canada Centres; selected Canada Post counters; and Government of Canada offices abroad. Our fees are regulated under the User Fees Act.
  • Contact the Passport Program free of charge if you have any questions about your passport application.
  • the Passport Program will never ask you to disclose the card security code on the back of your credit card when paying the passport fee.
  • Passport application forms are available free of charge.

Safeguard your personal information

  • Canadian passport holders play a vital role in maintaining the reputation of Canadian travel documents.
  • Never give out personal information contained in your passport or in your passport application (including photocopies) unless you are confident it is for a trusted organization or individual. The passport bearer assumes all responsibility for giving information contained in the passport to a third party.

Lost, stolen or misdirected passport information

In the event that a photocopy or scan of your passport is lost or stolen, or if you have provided a photocopy, scan or record of the information in your passport, to a person or organization in error:

  • Provided your passport, proof of citizenship and supporting identity documents are still in your possession, the risk that a third party could obtain a passport in your name is low.
  • A passport cannot be issued or replaced based on photocopies of original documents alone. Further, a passport cannot be issued or replaced solely on the basis of the information contained in a passport.

If you think that the security of your passport has been compromised, you may apply for a new passport to replace the current one. Please note:

  • The remaining validity period of the current passport cannot be transferred onto the new one.
  • You will have to pay the full fee to apply for a new passport.
