Audit of Operational Controls at
Ports of Entry (Based on the
1996 Tassé Report) – Final Report
2.5 Information Security
The 1996 Tassé report recommended that the Department, in conjunction with the regions, review the possibility of using screensaver password protection.
At the time of our audit, the audit team found that password-protected screensavers were used in only a few sites. The audit team was also advised that there was no corporate standard for screensavers. In many cases, screensavers had been disabled because, when a screen froze, other people could not use the terminal and client service suffered.
The new Global Case Management System should allow staff to use password-protected screensavers while maintaining good client service.
Recommendation 14: In light of recent security concerns, the Department should consider the use of password-protected screensavers.
Management Response
Screensaver password protection is a built-in feature of the Windows 2000 desktop, which has been or will be implemented on all work stations in domestic Citizenship and Immigration centres.
