Formative Evaluation of Canada’s Citizenship Week

Appendix E
Activity Guide Survey of Teachers

Ottawa

In Ottawa, there were 58 names available to be called. These were all names of individuals said to have ordered a copy of the 2002 activity guide. Other material may have been ordered at the same time. The intention was to interview 20 teachers to obtain their views on the activity guide. To obtain that number, 52 names were selected to be telephoned. For these names, telephone numbers were obtained from the original list of schools that had been sent at least one order form, informing them of the forthcoming availability of Canada’s Citizenship Week material.

Of the 52 names called, 43 were found to have valid telephone numbers. Of these, 24 (56 percent) were both reached and interviewed (20 in English and 4 in French.)

Gatineau

In Gatineau, there were 11 names available to be called. These were all names of individuals said to have ordered a copy of the 2002 activity guide. Of the 11 names called, all were found to have valid telephone numbers. Of these, 8 (73 percent) were both reached and interviewed (2 in English and 6 in French).

Good idea, will use guide. 2 0
Teachers would have liked to know in advance that we would be calling to do the survey, so that they could have had the guide in front of them to better answer the questions asked. Several teachers told me that they would call me back once they found the guide, but never called back. 5 0

Teacher’s Overall Evaluations of the 2002 Activity Guide
  Ottawa Gatineau
For an English teacher, it is an excellent guide. If I knew ahead of time, that the guide would be arriving in October, I would have prepared to use it more. CIC should have let the school know that Citizenship week was being changed from February (spring) to October (fall). 1 -
Cannot evaluate because it is only two months into school year. Teacher is still getting to know students and what they know. Will probably use the guide starting in February. 2 -
Focus on games, dances and drama. Biggest way to improve is to look at the curriculum in the school and plug it into the lesson plan that teachers will be teaching. Also, put it on the Web. Teachers would be willing to go to the site for games and the other activities. 1 -
Very good guide. There should be a feedback form provided or an address to which we could provide feedback. 2 -
I liked the parts near the beginning and rate the guide as Adequate + 1 -
Make sure that language choice is "very" clear on the internet order form. 1 -
Excellent guide. No suggested improvements. Very positive here — there are good ideas. Time of My Life is great! 1 -
Very good guide. Would like to have an explanation of the words O Canada…for instance, what does "Terre de nous aieux" really mean? Why were they chosen? How would you explain the words to a Haitian child newly arrived in Canada. - 1
Excellent guide. Teacher requested 100 copies of Contre-moi ta vie but only received 3 copies. - 1
Will not use the guide since children do not speak enough French before November. - 1
Immigrant children are so young. The like the flags & the emblems. - 1
