Formative Evaluation of Canada’s Citizenship Week

Activity Guide Survey of
Guide/Scout Leaders
Of the 13 youth leaders (10 Guides and 3 Scouts) in the Ottawa area who ordered the activity kit, 9 persons (6 Guide and 3 Scout Leaders) were telephoned. Of these, we were able to reach 4 Guide and 1 Scout Leader. (Four Guide Leaders were not reached: 1 telephone number was not in service, 1 was no longer at the listed number, and 2 were not at home. The 2 Scout Leaders did not have telephone listings.)
The 5 Leaders interviewed thought the activity guide was very good. They found it useful, clearly written, concise, written at a level that was accessible to the Guides themselves. The leaders of a younger Guide group was especially happy that it contained topics that could be used for their yearly activities. The Times of My Life (Family Tree) and the Reaffirmation Ceremony were the two parts that the leaders have used so far. All the leaders we spoke to plan to use other parts of the booklet during the remainder of the year. Several leaders said they had also used the 2001 book and will continue to order the activity booklets and material every year.
These youth leaders said that the material should be sent out early, no later than August, so that the leaders can have time to read the material before organizing their yearly programs. It is best to mail the material directly to the leaders and not to Guide Headquarters. If they have to wait for Headquarters to forward the material to them, they do not get it in time to incorporate into their yearly programs.
One leader mentioned that she had ordered the small Canadian flags two years in a row for use during Citizenship week but, unfortunately, did not receive them. Another said that the guide was only geared to the younger age group and not useful for the older Girl Guides.
