Guided by our shared values of democracy, freedom, human rights, and the rule of law, Canada continues to attract newcomers seeking refuge and opportunity.

Pluralism allows individuals to retain their cultural, linguistic and religious heritage within a framework of shared citizenship.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper (October 2006)

Our country is recognized as a leader among countries that embrace diversity. This was confirmed last year by the choice of Canada as the home for the new Global Centre for Pluralism. Our Government supports this organization, which will promote the values of human rights, good governance, the rule of law, and human development in the years ahead.

The Government of Canada is committed to reaching out to all Canadians, and is developing lasting relationships with ethnic and religious communities in Canada. We encourage communities to participate fully in Canadian society by enhancing their level of economic, social, and cultural integration and we will continue to promote integration in order to encourage prosperity and social cohesion.
