Search of citizenship records

This section contains policy, procedures and guidance used by IRCC staff. It is posted on the department’s website as a courtesy to stakeholders.

A search of citizenship records verifies citizenship registration records for citizens and non-citizens. There are three basic reasons a person would request a search for citizenship records:

  • the applicant does not have proof of citizenship;
  • the applicant has proof of citizenship but needs a letter saying how and/or when citizenship was obtained;
  • a third party asks for citizenship confirmation.

Accessing citizenship records

Procedures to request:

  • citizenship records;
  • personal information;
  • record letter or no record letter;
  • sharing information with third parties.

Retiring a citizenship application

Issuing Record and No Record letters

The three reasons someone would request a Record Letter:

  • the applicant does not have proof of citizenship
  • the applicant has proof but needs a letter saying how and/or when citizenship was obtained;
  • a third party asks for citizenship confirmation.
