Acceptable documents to establish permanent residence

Most citizenship applicants acquire permanent resident status in Canada at the time of original admission. Others acquire it after their initial entry.

When an applicant applies for citizenship, they obtain an application package that contains all the information necessary to start the application. Within the package is the Application For Canadian Citizenship form [CIT 0002 (PDF, 1.55MB)]. This form requires an applicant to include the following information to show that they are a permanent resident:

• the date applicant became a permanent resident (landed immigrant);
• photocopy of the applicant's Record of Landing form [IMM 1000] or Confirmation of Permanent Resident form [IMM 5292 or IMM 5688] or Indian Status Card;
• photocopy (on both sides) of applicant's permanent resident card (PRC).

The E&1 2740 form or an IMM 2740 form issued by Immigration can be accepted as official documents to establish permanent resident status. The E&I 2740 form and the IMM 2740 form confirm the permanent resident status of a person who arrived in Canada before 1952 when the IMM 1000 form replaced the E&I 2740 form.
