Naming procedures: Documents used to establish a name - Order of Priority

Please see the order of priority of identity documents to be used for establishing and recording client names by line of business below. Please note that this does not apply to requests for a change of name. Please see Change of name requests section for guidance on documents required for a change of name.

The Documents used to establish name records by business line page provides further details regarding the use of identity documents for this purpose.

Acceptable Translations

Any document that would establish a name and is in a language other than English or French (for example, a marriage certificate, a birth certificate, etc.) must be accompanied by an official English or French translation. The documents must be certified by an authorized person (application kits provide a list of authorized persons) and then the certified copies must be translated by a translator from an independent qualified translation service. The client will cover all costs related to the translation of documents.

Translations prepared by unauthorized persons familiar with the language of origin, including relatives, friends, acquaintances or other volunteer agencies, are NOT acceptable.
