Country of origin information

This section contains policy, procedures and guidance used by IRCC staff. It is posted on the department’s website as a courtesy to stakeholders.

Knowledge of country conditions is essential to making objective, reasoned and consistent decisions for some types of cases (e.g. refugee, PRRA and H&C applications). It is also important in the context of interventions at the refugee determination hearings of in-Canada claimants.

In almost all cases, country conditions information is essential to properly:

  • ask relevant questions during an interview
  • evaluate information objectively
  • assess credibility.

Decision-makers should regularly consult country condition information as conditions can change.
