Find out if you need a visa to travel to Canada

August 9 border changes

American citizens and permanent residents of the United States, who currently reside in the U.S. and who qualify as fully vaccinated travellers, will be able to enter Canada for discretionary travel starting August 9.

Unless eligible, other foreign nationals can’t enter Canada at this time.

Most people need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to travel to Canada – not both. Some people may only need their valid passport.

If you’re a Canadian permanent resident (PR), find out more about travelling to Canada with PR status.
